RHODODENDRON CAUCASICUM
This unique species of rhododendron has been used for centuries in folk medicine. In China, where it’s known as man-shan-hung, it’s a traditional remedy for respiratory infections. In the Republic of Georgia in Russia, it’s made into a tea that is sipped before meals. The Republic of Georgia is famous for its many residents that live to be one hundred and older. The unusually robust older population has attracted the attention of Russian scientists, who scrutinized the eating habits and lifestyle of its people. Rhododendron tea, which is rich in antioxidants, is believed to be one factor in the longevity of residents of Georgia. (Although Rhododendron causcasium is safe and has been used in traditional medicine for hundreds of years, some forms of the rhododendron plant are poisonous. Don’t try munching on your rhododendrons at home—they will make you sick.)
Russian scientists learned that this special species of the rhododendron plant is a natural fat blocker—it partially inhibits the action of an enzyme needed for fat absorption. However, unlike prescription fat blockers, it works gently and does not have any unpleasant side effects. Rhododendron doesn’t eliminate all fat, just some fat. Remember, you need fat to absorb fat soluble vitamins, to make hormones, and to perform countless other tasks in the body. It’s the excess fat that you don’t need!
Rhododendron is also a powerful antioxidant. In particular, it is a rich source of polyphenol, a phytochemical shown to protect against heart disease. Polyphenols prevent the oxidation of LDL or bad cholesterol, a risk factor for heart attacks. Studies show that rhododendron works especially well with arctic root (European ginseng) to burn fat and promote the formation of lean muscle mass. Even if you don’t diet or exercise, this herbal combination will improve your muscle-to-fat ratio, but the effects are far more dramatic if you eat carefully and do even a small amount of exercise. In the Republic of Georgia, rhododendron is also used to treat arthritis and gout.
